PERFORMERS: Frequently Asked Questions

Can I request a specific host location?

Yes! On the performer sign-up form, just name your specific host. We'll strive to accommodate all requests. If you don't have a specific preference, we'll match you with a suitable host, based on your technical needs and requirements.

What kind of equipment will be available?

This varies by host: Some may provide electrical outlets and basic sound equipment, others might have just electrical outlets, and others offer unadorned space (for acoustic groups). You'll be matched with a host that can accommodate your technical needs. 

What should I bring to my performance?

Your instruments, any specialized equipment you need, promotional materials, merchandise to sell (if desired), a tip jar (perhaps QR Code for digital payments), and water. Many host locations will provide stools and/or chairs, but if you prefer specific seating, you can feel free to bring your own chairs or stools.

How long are the performance slots?

Performance slots range from 1 hour to 2 hours, depending on your preference and availability. You can indicate your preferred duration when you sign up. You'll have some time to set up and tear down before and after your designated performance time.

Will there be a sound check?

Because of the event's informality, there won't be formal sound checks. We recommend arriving at your host location 30–45 minutes before your scheduled performance time to set up and briefly check your sound if you're using amplification.

How will people find my performance?

Your performance will be listed on our interactive map and schedule. Hosts may also have yard signs,  directing attendees. Performers can feel free to promote their Porchfest appearance on their own social media channels, helping draw your fans.

What if it rains?

Porchfest is a rain or shine event! Many host locations have covered areas (porches, garages, etc.) or will provide tents to protect performers in case of light rain. In the event of severe weather, we'll make announcements through our website.

What if I'm in multiple bands/groups?

Please list all bands you're performing with — on your registration form — so we can avoid scheduling conflicts. We'll try to schedule performances with enough time for you to travel between venues. If you're participating in multiple bands, please make sure each band registers separately. Then mention the connection.

Will I get paid?

Porchfest is a community event, so performers aren't paid an appearance fee. But you're encouraged to have a tip jar — many attendees are generous. You can also sell merchandise.

Can I sell merchandise?

Yes! Performers are welcome to sell CDs, vinyl, t-shirts, or other merchandise during their set. You'll handle your own sales. You might consider bringing a small table, and having someone available to handle sales while you perform. Many performers also bring a tip jar — or QR Code for digital payments.
